A bear has caused embarrassment across the publishing industry by entering a library and spending several minutes there without announcing a project.

In this fictional account, the animal passed the self-help section without seeking to optimise anything, inspected a shelf and declined to explain what the visit said about its personal brand. Staff described the behaviour as unfamiliar but promising.

A nearby book-club member admitted the bear had now been closer to the selected novel than he had. He had listened to an interview with the author, however, and felt this should count towards the discussion.

The bear's silence was initially interpreted as a thoughtful response to contemporary fiction. A visiting critic suggested it represented resistance to narrative closure. A keeper suggested it represented a bear.

Difficulties arose when staff tried to issue a library card. The animal could not provide proof of address because the forest does not send bills, placing it in the same administrative category as a recent graduate.

The library has since commissioned a public-engagement strategy to understand how the bear found its way inside. Preliminary findings suggest the building contained books and the door was somewhere nearby.

The bear has been invited to return. Unlike the other guests at the autumn literary programme, it has not asked whether there will be a green room.
