A fishmonger has installed a mortgage adviser beside the haddock to help customers navigate the emotional and financial commitment of buying supper. Walk-in appointments are available, though anyone considering a whole salmon should bring statements.
The adviser will explain repayment options, affordability checks and whether the customer is purchasing a first fillet or moving up the seafood ladder. A small mackerel may still be bought outright. Prawns are available through a shared-ownership arrangement in which the shop retains most of the bag.
Customer Peter Wren said he had intended to cook something simple but found himself discussing a deposit on cod. He was offered a smaller portion in a developing area of the counter and told it had considerable potential. His offer was accepted subject to seasoning.
The fishmonger denied that the service made shopping unnecessarily complicated: customers already spend long enough staring at the prices to complete a credit application. Wren eventually chose beans and was congratulated on keeping his options open. The salmon remains on the counter, where several interested parties are waiting for a correction.
